So what’s so special about Philips Phototherapy Narrowband Tubes and what will they do for my condition?

Philips Phototherapy tubes are recognised within the medical profession as being the leading tube for Narrowband UVB light therapy. The Philips TL01 tube is the same tube that is used in the full body phototherapy units that you will have used if you have ever had Narrowband UVB Phototherapy treatment in the NHS.

The TL01 and (smaller) PL01 nUVB lights are specifically designed for Phototherapy treatment to emit UVB radiation (in the ‘B’ bandwidth of the UV spectrum 280 to 315 nm) with 66% of the total Narrowband  UVB light output consisting of UVB rays at 311nm wavelength (nUVB), which is the optimum wavelength for phototherapy.

I’m going to digress a little and provide some historical background on Light therapy, so that you will be able to see where the Philips TL01 Narrowband Tubes are used in current medical practice.

UVB light as a treatment of skin conditions has a long and rich history. “Heliotherapy” was described in the “Papyrus Ebers”, one of the oldest and most important medical documents of ancient Egypt (dated circa 1500 BC). One treatment regime for Vitiligo, described in these papers, consisted of ingestion of a boiled extract derived from Ammi majus, a weed growing in the Nile Delta, followed by exposure to the Egyptian sun.

One of India’s sacred books, the Atharva Veda, compiled between 1200 BC– 1000 BC described how the seeds of the plant Psoralea corylifolia were used to treat “leucoderma” (Vitiligo). 

Later, around 1220 AD, an Arabian physician Ibn al-Bitar, born in Malaga, Andalucia in Spain, described the same treatment in his book Kitab Al-jami li-mufradat al-adwiya wa al-aghdhiya (the book of medicinal and nutritional terms), one of the earliest pharmaceutical encyclopaedias. 

These crude treatments were the very earliest forms of a Light therapy that we would recognise today, PUVA. 

PUVA photochemotherapy is a relatively modern treatment for psoriasis & vitiligo. 

Although somewhat depreciated against Narrowband UVB therapy, PUVA is still recognised & prescribed for phototherapy treatment today. The P in PUVA stands for Psoralen. Psoralen is an organic compound that can be derived from the Ammi majus plant mentioned in the ancient treatments. Modern research has enabled us to understand the mechanism which makes Psoralen effective in these therapies. Essentially, Psoralen acts as a photosensitizer, making the skin more sensitive to light and its therapeutic effect on conditions such as Psoriasis and Vitiligo.

 Current mainstream phototherapy treatments

Whilst PUVA treatment may still be in use, it has been depreciated against light therapy based on Narrowband UVB light

PUVA therapy, using Psoralen and exposure to UVA light was originally reported as beneficial in 1974. The light tubes that produce UVA light also generate a very small amount of UVB light (only 4% of the light emitted from these UVA tubes is UVB).

As research progressed, in the ‘80s Clinicians realised that it was actually the therapeutic properties of the UVB light that effected the improvement in conditions of Psoriasis and Vitiligo sufferers. This led to the introduction in 1978 of treatment based around UVB Cabinets (remarkably similar to their current-day counterparts).

Further research into the therapeutic effects of UVB light brings us up to the current day.

Narrowband UVB (nUVB) phototherapy has now been used for over 20 years. It is more commonly used today than broadband UVB (bUVB) and is the most common and current phototherapy treatment provided within the NHS for the conditions mentioned.

Studies show that narrowband UVB is safer and more effective than the full UVB wavelength used in broad-band UVB. Narrowband UVB may work with fewer treatments each week and can help you achieve longer remission (clearance of your symptoms for periods of time).

Philips UVB fluorescent phototherapy lamps are installed in treatment units in many hospitals globally and utilised extensively within our National Health Service, here in the UK.

The key fact with these fluorescent phototherapy lamps is that they are designed to emit the largest possible amount of Narrowband UVB light targeting a very specific frequency range, 66% of the total light output consisting of nUVB rays at 311nm wavelength. 311nm is the optimum wavelength for phototherapy.

The TL01 lamps are installed in a variety of different units we offer, dependent on which type of treatment you wish to pursue – we offer canopies or  full body cabinets which enable you to treat your condition at home in a similar style to the walk in cabinets that are used in NHS and Private practices.

The PL01 light is a physically smaller lamp, but with identical phototherapy properties to the TL01. The PL01 is fitted in our Mini units designed to treat more localised areas (an example would be where, in the case of psoriasis, your condition is limited to plaques in a few of your joint areas).
