The Benefits of Our Phototherapy Narrowband Cabinets

At MBS Much Better Skin, we offer UVB phototherapy narrowband cabinets to give you full body coverage and treatment in one session. You can step inside the cabinet, the tubes are all around you and unlike our other units they give you full 360 degree treatment. They are available with either 24 Philips TL01 narrowband tubes, or a mixture of 12 Philips TL01 tubes and 12 RUVA tubes. Today we’re going to look at some of the great benefits to using these narrowband cabinets on skin conditions including psoriasis, vitiligo and eczema. This is hospital style treatment in the comfort of your own home

Phototherapy and Psoriasis

The National Psoriasis Foundation in the USA recommends full body coverage for phototherapy when treating psoriasis conditions when over 5 percent of the body is affected, or if your symptoms are very widespread across large areas of the body. In order to use UVB light in this way, it is inevitable that areas that do not have symptoms of psoriasis will be exposed to the therapy too. Using narrowband UVB phototherapy, waves of ultraviolet light are between 311 to 313 nm, and studies have shown that it is safer and more effective than the full UVB wavelength that is used in broadband UVB. The Psoriasis Association in the UK states that “The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance on the assessment and management for psoriasis (CG 153) recommends that UVB therapy be offered to people with plaque or guttate psoriasis that cannot be controlled with topical (applied to skin) treatments alone.” Therefore, if you have tried to treat your condition to no avail, then these UVB narrowband cabinets could be the answer for you.

Phototherapy and Vitiligo

Phototherapy is also recommended to treat sufferers of vitiligo – a condition where the pigment cells of the skin are destroyed in certain areas. In research reported in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, it was stated that “It can be concluded that patients who have lesions in exposed areas, especially over the face, tend to comply with treatment.” It also stated that “NBUVB is found to be superior to PUVA due to various reasons, including better repigmentation and colour match with natural skin, a better safety profile as it maximizes the delivery of narrow-band UVB radiation.” Research provided by the University of Nottingham has concluded that “Long-duration phototherapy should be encouraged to enhance the treatment response in vitiligo. The greatest response is anticipated on the face and neck.” For these reasons, you should feel confident that you will see an improvement in your condition by using our narrowband cabinets.

Phototherapy and Eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema involves small, extremely itchy blisters on the edges of fingers, toes, palms and soles of the feet. On the other hand, nummular eczema (also known as discoid eczema and nummular dermatitis) can affect people in different ways, with areas of the skin that may be dry and scaly, or wet and open, which may or may not be itchy. Thankfully, UVB phototherapy can be used to treat both types. The National Eczema Association in the USA states that “about 70% of people with eczema get better with phototherapy. Some people find that phototherapy puts their eczema in a “remittive” or “quiet” state long past the end of the treatment.” If you have your own narrowband cabinet, you have the benefit of being able to maintain these results with instant access to phototherapy treatment.
