Description
Psoriasis Treatment Lamp – Philips n-UVB by Saalmann Medical 4Yr Warranty
Narrowband UVB Phototherapy is recognised by Doctors and Dermatologists as an extremely effective therapy for treating Psoriasis. n-UVB Phototherapy is commonly used in the NHS and Private practice as the second line of treatment when topical creams and steroids fail to work.
The manufacturer of this device, Saalmann Medical, are a German Medical Device manufacturer who pioneered UV therapy in the 1960s and have specialised in producing Hand-Held UV phototherapy devices since 1972.
This Psoriasis treatment Lamp is a class II a Medical Device, designed to treat Psoriasis at home as well in a clinical setting. It is certified and conforms to the latest European regulatory standards.
- With this Psoriasis treatment lamp most users see Psoriasis start to clear after 4-6 weeks (20 to 30 individual sessions) of a strictly maintained treatment regime.
- Simply place the Psoriasis treatment lamp close to the affected area (the comb attachment determines the precise optimum distance from the skin) and use 3 or 5 times per week.
- The narrowband UVB light source is a 311nm Philips n-UVB PL01 9w tube.
- The device comes fitted with a UK plug and supplied with UV goggles.
- 4 Year (Private use) manufacturer’s warranty. 2 Year clinical use warranty.
This Psoriasis treatment lamp is ideal for where the condition is limited to small areas. For example, where Psoriasis plaques are limited to small areas on hands, joints or the scalp, or, in the case of Vitiligo, small areas of de-pigmentation.
The Psoriasis treatment lamp is small and portable. At MBS we specialise in n-UVB phototherapy devices for domestic use, but our other units whilst designed to be used in your home, are not portable. You will be able to take this unit with you if you are travelling and thereby benefit from continuity of treatment that n-UVB phototherapy requires.
The unit is discreet, being of a similar size to a pair of hair-tongs. For someone who travels frequently, a student, or someone sharing accommodation, the device is completely inconspicuous and can be used to continue your treatment regime wherever you may be, in complete privacy.
Narrowband UVB outpatient treatment using hand-held devices is used within the NHS for treatment of Psoriasis and Vitiligo. Specifically for Vitiligo, the University of Nottingham under the auspices of the NHS performed trials of home based Vitiligo treatment using Hand-Held devices. They produced a sequence of videos which show you exactly how a hand-held UVB device was used to treat Vitiligo at home. NHS Scotland (Tayside Health Authority) also run a program for outpatient use of hand-held phototherapy devices for their patients.
We sell this device to a leading Harley Street Dermatology Clinic. If you are seeking a Private Dermatologist, this clinic is led by one of the best in the country. Please contact us for details.
At MBS we specialise in narrowband UVB phototherapy devices for domestic use. From cabinets designed to replicate those used in Hospitals and the NHS through to these hand-held units, our units will enable to manage your condition with the same treatment you would receive in the NHS in the convenience & comfort of your own home.
This is an extremely high-quality n-UVB phototherapy device, manufactured in Germany by a market leading Medical Device Manufacturer and fitted, at manufacture, with a genuine Philips PL01 9w UVB narrowband tube. The tube is certified for 500 hours use and the device & tube carry a manufacturer’s warranty of 4 years of personal use.
Please note that the Saalmann Medical UVB Phototherapy lamp is limited in one respect only, it’s size. if large areas of your skin have been affected by your condition, you will have to repeatedly move the light face of the device to cover the whole area. In addition, where your condition affects areas which are awkward to reach, for example your back or shoulders we would suggest that you look at our other larger models.
We have seen competitor n-UVB devices of similar size, mounted via clamps or stands seeking to alleviate the problems mentioned above. However, we would suggest that you consider the fact that hand held devices such as ours and those of our competitors are designed to be used at very close proximity to the skin. Again, we would stress that if you are seeking to treat larger areas, or areas that are hard to reach, you would be best advised to evaluate our other units which have bigger light faces designed to cover much larger areas, with the light source further from the skin. With this device , that distance from the skin is set by the comb attachment. Holding or mounting the device further away from the skin decreases the efficacy of the treatment as stated by the Medical Equipment manufacturer.
Our suggestion would be that if your condition covers larger areas or areas that are more awkward to reach with a hand-held device, you look at our larger units, such as the Mini-Unit on stand which are designed for the purpose with larger light faces and lamps.
We would emphasise the fact that this is a genuine UVB phototherapy device manufactured to the highest standards by a German Medical Device manufacturer, designed for the purpose of treating skin conditions which respond to n-UVB light such as Psoriasis, Vitiligo and Eczema. Please be wary of purchasing devices which are not built to the same standards as there are cheaper products advertised for phototherapy treatment which are desk lamps that have been converted to use a Philips bulb. Buy your product from a trusted source as cheaper imported products are available as well as fake Philips lamps.
If you do your research, you will establish that there are only a few Medical Device Manufacturers in the world who produce these phototherapy devices. Chinese imports abound but the only manufacturers who currently are certified to the current EU MDD Regulatory standard are European Medical Device Manufacturers. Chinese models are not certified to EU MDD.
We are proud to represent Saalmann. We are registered with the MHRA as the “Responsible Person” for the manufacturer in the UK (a post Brexit requirement for companies importing medical devices into the UK). We are confident that your purchase with us will afford you the highest standard of treatment for your condition.
Saalmann are in the process of collating data for one of the largest surveys on the efficacy of their product. If you purchase one of their devices we will contact you (10 weeks after purchase) for your input to this ongoing study.
At MBS we specialise in narrowband UVB phototherapy devices for domestic use. From cabinets designed to replicate those used in Hospitals and the NHS through to these hand-held units, our units will enable you to manage your condition with the same phototherapy treatment you would receive in the NHS in the convenience & comfort of your own home.

What is UVB Phototherapy?
UVB Phototherapy is an established and effective treatment that has been used in the NHS and globally since the 90’s. Research prior to this established the most therapeutic (and safest) form of UVB to be “Narrowband” UVB (NB-UVB, n-UVB) which is light in the 311nm-313nm spectrum.
n-UVB Phototherapy exposes the skin to this therapeutic light to treat disorders such as Psoriasis, Vitiligo and Eczema.
These disorders are recognised as immune mediated conditions, triggered when the body’s immune system does not function “normally” and becomes overactive.
- For example, in the case of Psoriasis, the normal skin cell life cycle is accelerated from 4 weeks to 3-4 days resulting in immature skin cells being pushed to the surface of the skin.
- Or, with Vitiligo, where the immune system is similarly triggered into overactivity, which ultimately causes the destruction of melanocyte cells. Destruction of these cells results in the depigmentation of the skin.
UVB Phototherapy works by affecting a number of biological processes associated with these skin conditions. UVB Phototherapy has a mediating effect on the immune response in the skin, moderating the immune system response to “normal levels” resulting in reduced inflammation, a return to “normal” pigmentation, reduced itchiness and scaling.
Why UVB Phototherapy at home rather than via the NHS?
UVB light therapy involves exposing the skin to the light for very short periods of time. Typically, this exposure will be between 30 seconds and a maximum of 4 minutes, 2-3 times each week, typically seeing results within 4 to 8 weeks. Please note these estimations carefully. UV Phototherapy is extremely effective, but only if you stick to the treatment regime rigorously.
Contrasting NHS Phototherapy treatment appointments with UVB Phototherapy at home.
- If you have a n-UVB phototherapy device at home, treating yourself 4 times per week becomes very simple.
- You do not need to allocate any time for the treatment. You can integrate your 30 second – 4-minute exposure in your daily schedule, after a shower in the morning or your bath at night.
- No time off work. No awkward conversation regarding your condition.
- No problem sticking to the treatment schedule. You only have to find a spare 4 minutes somewhere in your day.
- No travelling to a treatment centre.
- No costs associated with attending a hospital appointment.
- UVB Light treatment at home puts you permanently at the front of the queue for treatment.
- If you miss a few sessions – Not a problem, just restart the course!
- If your Psoriasis flares up – You can treat yourself immediately!
- You can take control of the management of your condition!
- Knowing that you can control your condition reduces the amount of stress associated with a flare. This can break the vicious circle where stressing exacerbates Psoriasis.
At MBS we have endeavoured to make the same n-UVB Phototherapy that is available to patients in a Hospital available to patients at home.

We recognise that many of our customers value our experience and sometimes look to us for advice.

Even if you have researched n-UVB thoroughly, (as most of our customers do). Please do get in touch, we may be able to offer some further insights that you may not have considered ….. and if nothing else, some empathy.
