Which device is right for your condition?
n-UVB Phototherapy is a globally recognised treatment for skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Vitiligo and Eczema.
In the UK Dermatologists in the NHS and Private practice will, in most cases offer n-UVB Phototherapy as the second line of treatment when topical treatments prove ineffective.
Our n-UVB devices are designed to provide the same therapeutic treatment, delivered using Philips 311nm n-UVB lamps, for private light therapy in the comfort of your own home.

9Tube Philips TL01 n-UVB Phototherapy Unit
Our 9 Tube Canopy is the most popular full body unit that we sell and also the model that we use in our Hire fleet.
This is a full-length canopy for full body coverage.
9 x 6ft n-UVB Philips TL01 311nm narrowband tubes provide the same Phototherapy that you would receive in a Hospital or Dermatology Centre. Covering the full length of the body, the canopy is suitable for moderate and severe conditions.
These units enable you to treat each side of your body in one single exposure, (to be clear, by exposing your front and then turning to expose your back).
If you have Psoriasis or Vitiligo all over your body or a moderate to severe condition, our 9 Tube Canopy ensures that your skin will not be over exposed when you treat yourself. Twin safety timers facilitate treatment times of between 30 seconds and 4 Minutes max ensure that you will not over-expose your skin to the therapeutic n-UVB light.
Please don’t endeavour to use a Hand Held device to treat a Whole Body condition. The 9 x 6ft tubes in the 9 tube canopy give the canopy a light face of 190cm x67 cm and although the lamps in both the Hand Held unit and the Canopy are Philips 311nm n-UVB Phototherapy tubes, the 6ft TL01 lamps used in the Canopy are far stronger than the 9watt 12cm PL01 lamp in the Hand Held unit.
If you do, try to treat large areas of your skin with the Hand Held or similar sized competitor products you will only be able to treat patches of 12cm x 5cm with each exposure.
Additionally, it’s hard to be accurate when repeating the exposures to cover large areas of skin which could result in inadvertent over exposure of overlapping areas of skin to UV light.
Our suggestion would be that if your condition covers larger areas or areas that are more awkward to reach with a hand-held device like your back, you look at our larger units, such as the Mini-Unit on stand which are designed for the purpose with larger light faces and lamps.
Partial Body Mini UVB Phototherapy Unit
This Partial Body Mini UVB Phototherapy Unit is designed for people who suffer from Psoriasis, Vitiligo and other skin conditions which respond well to treatment with UVB light.
The unit is designed for treating large localised areas of Psoriasis or Vitiligo e.g. large patches on arms/ legs at home. However, if your whole body is affected, we suggest that one of our whole-body units would be more appropriate.
The Unit has a light face of 60 cm x 30 cm and contains two 311nm Philips PL01 medical UVB narrowband tubes (these are a smaller version of the TL01 tube and use the same technology to produce the therapeutic narrowband UVB light). The unit is mounted on a robust tripod stand which enables you to focus the light on the affected areas thereby facilitating simple and straightforward treatment
Philips n-UVB Hand Held lamp by Saalmann
Our Hand Held product is made by a German medical manufacturer, Saalmann Medical who pioneered UV Phototherapy research in the 60’s producing their first lamp for Psoriasis in 1974. Their product conforms to all the latest European regulatory standards, EU MDD and from June 2024 EU MDR (the latest standard that supersedes EU MDD).
The n-UVB Hand Held Lamp by Saalmann treats Psoriasis & Vitiligo and is ideal for treatment where the condition is limited to small areas. For example, where Psoriasis plaques are limited to small areas on hands, joints or the scalp, or, in the case of Vitiligo, small areas of de-pigmentation. The comb attachment provided defines the distance at which the device should be used from the skin.
This is quite critical as many competitor products will depict their device being used further away from the body implying that the device can cover larger areas of skin.
This device is limited in one respect only, it’s size. if large areas of your skin have been affected by your condition, you will have to repeatedly move the light face of the device to cover the whole area. In addition, where your condition affects areas which are awkward to reach, for example your back or shoulders we would suggest that you look at our other larger models.
We have seen competitor n-UVB devices of similar size, mounted via clamps or stands seeking to alleviate the problems mentioned above. However, we would suggest that you consider the fact that Hand Held devices such as ours and those of our competitors are designed to be used at very close proximity to the skin. Again, we would stress that if you are seeking to treat larger areas, or areas that are hard to reach, you would be best advised to evaluate our other units which have bigger light faces designed to cover much larger areas, with the light source further from the skin. With this device, that distance from the skin is set by the comb attachment. Holding or mounting the device further away from the skin decreases the efficacy of the treatment as stated by the Medical Equipment manufacturer.
A couple of other notes related to competitor devices in this class.
Before we were able to offer the Saalmann Hand Held product we offered Hand Held UVB devices produced in China. We changed to a European manufacturer (Saalmann) as the quality of the Chinese product was incomparable with the European product and deteriorated steadily resulting in a huge number of returns. We also had to translate the instruction manual into something that could be understood in English.
Our Saalman product comes with a 4 year (personal use) warranty (2 years in a clinical setting) and an instruction guide from the manufacturer (in English).
We have also noticed recently (May 2024) that 308nm LED Hand Held devices are being advertised as suitable for Phototherapy for Psoriasis and Vitiligo. We would strongly caution anyone considering these devices against purchase.
308nm light is used very effectively in Phototherapy for Psoriasis and Vitiligo but is currently delivered in the Medical Profession via an “Excimer laser” device. Being a laser, the device is not suitable for Phototherapy at home and has to be administered in a clinical setting.
These 308nm LED devices have been developed in China as an alternative to Excimer Laser therapy. However, they carry no clinical certification even in China. Currently, (May 2024) their efficacy has only been proven in a research study based on 22 people. Further, they emit extremely intense light in a focused area which exacerbates the risk of skin damage if not used properly (they have a very high output: 23 mW/cm2 as compared with 3.5 mW/cm2 emitted by the Philips PL01 lamp) . More seriously, no clinical trials have been performed using these devices and these devices are definitely not used in the Medical Profession. Please check this information with your Dermatologist before purchasing a 308nm LED Phototherapy device, we do not stock these as we do not believe they are suitable or safe for Phototherapy at home.
Hospital Style n-UVB Phototherapy Cabinets
At the top of our range are Full Body Narrowband Cabinets with Philips TL01 Tubes for Hospital style treatment. These cabinets provide full body coverage in one session.
If you have had Phototherapy treatment in Hospital you will be familiar with their design. These cabinets offer the ultimate home treatment for conditions from moderate through to severe, very severe and even extreme skin disorders.
Our Full Body Narrowband Cabinets with Philips TL01 Tubes utilise the full power of the Philips UVB narrowband tube technology, for just a few seconds every other day, you should see a dramatic improvement in your condition within 4 to 8 weeks.
The cabinets are uniquely designed for Home use. Hospital Cabinets from other manufacturers aimed at the clinical market can weigh up to 3 tons (think Range Rover) requiring reinforced flooring and 3 Phase power supplies. As opposed to our Hospital Cabinet, which will be installed by 1 person, who will install and set up the device for you in your home, (no strengthening of floors required), and plug it into your mains supply using just one standard 13amp fused plug.
Standing inside the cabinet 24 Philips TL01 311nm n-UVB Phototherapy tubes completely surround the individual, delivering full 360-degree coverage in one session, capable of reaching every inch of skin similar to the Phototherapy cabinets in Hospitals.
Costs vs. Benefits
On the subject of budget, we absolutely recognise that our Canopy products and Cabinets makes these devices significant purchases. To this point we would like to highlight certain factors that are significant to customers that have purchased from us and have influenced their decision to purchase.
Psoriasis and Vitiligo are recognised as immune mediated conditions. This is where the body’s immune system does not function “normally” and becomes overactive.
- For example, in the case of Psoriasis, the normal skin cell life cycle is accelerated from 4 weeks to 3-4 days resulting in immature skin cells being pushed to the surface of the skin.
- With Vitiligo, the immune system is similarly triggered into overactivity, which causes the destruction of melanocyte cells. Destruction of these cells results in the depigmentation of the skin.
UV Phototherapy has a mediating effect on the immune response in the skin, moderating the immune system response to “normal levels” resulting in reduced inflammation, a return to “normal” pigmentation, reduced itchiness and scaling.
However, currently there is no permanent “cure” for these types of condition. All treatments for these conditions including UVB Phototherapy mediate the immune system to restore it to a degree of normality. This state of normality may last for just a few weeks, months or indefinitely. It is well recognised that certain “triggers”, (stress, strep infections, cuts, diet, the weather, to name but a few), can disrupt this normality and trigger a Psoriasis flare.
Consequently, UVB Phototherapy should be viewed as a treatment that should be used until Psoriasis has been cleared to a level that you are comfortable with. If your Psoriasis are cleared completely (and UVB Phototherapy is very effective in this respect), then Phototherapy treatment should be paused until such time the Psoriasis symptoms recur. Psoriasis is however, a chronic condition which will inevitably recur.
In this context, Phototherapy at home can provide considerable benefits in the long term. In this light, the expense of a larger unit has ben justified in the minds of many of our customers. As a reminder we have listed some of those benefits below.
What are the benefits of UVB light therapy at home?
- Access to therapy immediately, when you need it!
- When your condition flares, you will avoid delays for an appointment with your GP or Dermatologist, and any subsequent referral or wait times associated with receiving the therapy at a treatment centre. *Please note* we strongly advocate that you keep your GP or Dermatologist aware of any therapy regime and always defer to their advice on any treatment of your condition.
- Clinicians have not defined all of the triggers for these auto immune conditions. However, stress is a well-recognised factor. Having immediate access to a medically proven remediation therapy will undoubtedly reduce your stress, thereby breaking the circle of anxiety leading to further exacerbation of your condition.
- Improved mental wellbeing and quality of life as a result of successful control of your condition.
- Typical light therapy regimes offered in the NHS require regular attendance at a hospital 2 to 3 times per week for exposure to Narrowband UVB light, with a treatment session time of between 30 seconds and an absolute maximum of 4 minutes. This is a difficult schedule to adhere to from a purely practical perspective if you have a busy life or a job.
- No costs associated with attending treatment at a Dermatology centre
- No time off work to attend appointments.
- No creams or ointments.
- No drugs, steroids, auto-immune suppressors or biological regimes.
- Treating yourself at home will enable you to take back control of the management of your condition!
Whilst we cannot make our Phototherapy Canopies and Cabinets less expensive, we can offer 0% finance on these units.
Unlike other companies who offer brokered finance options which charge considerable amounts of interest, (certainly more than a loan from your bank), MBS can offer 0% finance over 12 or 15 months. To do this we authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under FRN:667294.
